Normandy for the Holidays

Normandy became my holiday tradition in France. I spent three Christmases there with my American aunt and her family (all natives of Normandy) I've been spoiled by the best spots in this region and am sharing a few below. Beautiful French countryside landscapes, half-timbered houses, and seaside strolls decorate my Christmas memories.

Cue Normandy cravings: a glass of pommeau, camembert cheese, crêpes, teurgoule... throw in a bûche de Noël for good measure!

Le Mont Saint-Michel

The second-most visited visited tourist destination in France (after the Eiffel Tower), is the beautiful Mont Saint-Michel— an island at high tide, home to an 11th century monastery. Simply a wonder to behold, le Mont Saint-Michel is accessible by a causeway that connects to the mainland. You can catch one of the many free shuttles carrying tourists back and forth daily from the car park.

Honfleur

Many an artist's muse— port town, Honfleur, is perfectly charming. The colored buildings along the dock melt over the water like an impressionist painting. The town is an absolute pleasure to wander through.

Étretat

A quaint seaside village, graced by stunning cliff formations. Wonderful views can be enjoyed from up high at La Chapelle Notre Dame de la Garde, but be sure to walk along the sandy beaches as well.

Cap de la Hague

Along the tip of the Cherbourg peninsula, you are treated to superb sea views, cows grazing in the coastal fields, and lovely Norman homes. Take a scenic drive and step out to breathe in the seaside.

Beuvron-en-Auge

While there isn't too much to see in the village, Beuvron-en-Auge, what there is to see is so gosh darn cute that it's worth a stop if you're in the area. Historic half-timbered houses line the roads of this Norman village located a 30 minute drive from Caen, as well as from Deauville in the opposite direction. It's part of La Route du Cidre, a 40 kilometer marked route starting in Cambremer, that guides you through the countryside to visit producers of AOC Pays d'Auge cider.

Bonnes Fêtes!
